TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION
3 original brass keys: Eb-keys with square flat flaps, type Young-A; C-key with round flat flap type Young-X.
Raised key rings circular.
SATB (springs attached to the body).
3rd and 4th hole doubled with finger cove.
Bell with 2 vent-holes and inner rim.
One brass and bone ring on top of middle joint.
Brass wire ring on bell bottom.
Likely that the instrument has been heavily modified through time. Several keys have been added to an original 3-keyed instrument, and removed again later on. Only the pillars stayed on the instrument and the extra key-holes were plugged:
on TJ: Speaker (octave key) Bb - G#; on MJ: cross-F.
-
FL ?> Faults
Fair. Several cracks have been repaired. Lower key ring chipped and re-glued.
Instrument has undergone a number of changes. Later added keys are missing at present, but the pillars are still on the instrument, and the extra holes drilled for that are now plugged, but leaving damage to the instrument.

Remarks
Haynes type-A2 hautboy.
Haynes (2001) p.355 presumes that type-A2 hautboys signed I.H.Rottenburgh like this one, are probably made by the father Jean-Hyacinth, and not by his sons who used the same mark.
Brass and bone ring on MJ top most probably added later, as a repair for crack in MJ brink. Brass ring on bell bottom probably added later to stop crack in bell. (See Young 1993 p.194).
Some holes show traces of enlargement, probably in an attempt to lift up the pitch: one or both vent-holes in the bell, C-key hole (very oval), and possibly holes 1, 4 and 5, making the intonation uneven. Reed-well shows traces of re-reaming.
